Founded by the Rev: Benjamin lngham who was a friendly rival of John Wesley. By 1743 he had founded sixty Societies in his native Yorkshire and had preached at Come. He died in 1772 where as John Wesley lived 20 years longer and was able to establish his chapels more firmly The lnghamites gradually became less popular so that in 1814 there were only 13 Chapels left, mainly in the Colne - Barrowford - Pendle area. The largest Chapel was at Wheatley Lane, Barrowford and the next largest was at Winewall, there was also a smaller one at Cottontree and at Colne. The one at Winewall was pulled down in the 1960's and the one at Cottontree has been pulled down quite recently. The few members still left at Winewall meet in the upper floor of the Sunday School Hence the notice about services we saw on the wall. There were Tillotsons worshipping there for many years and there is still a Tillotson in the membership today. This information has been received from a lady Registrar who was connected with this area and Chapel. Before the last war she had worked for a dressmaker Dorothy Tillotson and had been a member of the Cottontree lnghamites Chapel. |
