The Muster Roll of 1539 - in times of national stress, all men in England were liable to be called up to fight any of the King's enemies. Lists, compiled between 1486 and 1625, still exist. 28 men were called up from Lothesdale and directed to meet up at Bracewell on 27th and 28th March and on the 1st of April 1539. One man from Lothesdale was described as "not hable, so 27 went from Lothesdale to Bracewell. John Tillotson, was both a "bill-man and an archer", and one of four TILLOTSONS sent to Bracewell

* The following series of extracts from Marriage Licences, formerly preserved in the Registry of York, is taken from a MS. of Mr. W. Paver, which has been purchased for the British Museum.
